This is the authentic French toast recipe. French toast has various names like eggy bread, Bombay toast, gipsy toast, poor knights and many other names varying with regions. It was originated in the Roman Empire. The original French name for the “pain perdu”

 This is the recipe for 6 servings. We require 6 eggs,1 and ½ cup heavy cream, 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract,1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon, a pinch of ground nutmeg, a pinch of salt, 6 slices bread, 4 tablespoons unsalted butter,4 tablespoon vegetable oil, pure maple syrup for servings

Steps to follow

1. Take a medium bowl, crack eggs in a bowl, add cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in the bowl and whisk it.

2. Take a shallow baking dish, place a single layer of bread in that dish and pour egg mixture in that dish and soak for 10 minutes then turn over, the bread must be soaked through.

3. Place that soaked bread on the pan and cook it until golden brown.

4. Serve hot with maple syrup and fruits of your choice.

There are numerous versions of this. One of these, made in Hong Kong includes peanut butter of fruit jam. For this two normal pieces of bread are taken and they are combined with putting peanut butter or jam as filling in between. 2 or 3 bread pieces can be stacked like that and this combination is dipped in beaten egg.
