It’s not news that through MNP or Mobile Number Portability, we can change our mobile network, without giving up our existing phone number. Many, however, don’t know how to go about it.

To start with, let’s start with the criteria:

1. Porting is only possible in the same telecom circle.

2. To port your number, the existing connection must be active for at least 90 days.

3. All your previous dues should be clear at the time of porting.

Now we can move to the procedure which mobile number porting involves:

1. The first step in to choose the network you want to switch to. Visit their website and check out all the plans, comparing them with your existing connection.

2. The next step is to give a ring to your chosen service provider. When you are talking to them, be adamant about what you want, and don’t compromise. They will eventually tell you about new plans which might not be there on the website.

3. After the telephonic conversation and agreement on the tariff, they may send someone for the paperwork at your doorstep or ask you to visit their nearest store. There you need to fill the Porting Form and the Customer Acquisition Form.

4. The Porting Form will ask you to fill in the UPC or Unique Porting Code. To get the UPC, send PORT<Space>Mobile Number to 1900. If you are from Jammu & Kashmir, you will have to call 1900 and ensure your identity, to get the code.

5. Submit a passport size photograph and an identity proof along with the form. As the identity proof, you can submit the self-attested copy of Driving License, Passport, Adhar Card, PAN Card, or Voter ID.

6. You will also need to submit an address proof, for which a copy of landline or electricity bill would suffice.

7. After submitting all these documents, you will be given the new SIM Card right away, which will take about 7 days to start functioning.

8. You will be charged around Rs. 19 as the porting amount.

9. Replace the new SIM with the existing one as soon as it stops functioning.
