Total Knee Replacement (TKR) may seem to be a better option for people suffering from debilitating arthritic pain that is seriously affecting their quality of life. But doctors are of the opinion about 20% of arthritic patients seeking TKR do not really need it.

According to them, TKR should be considered as the last resort of treatment when physiotherapy, lbody weight reduction, medication and other minimally invasive procedures fail to give relief from the condition. For example, if severe pain persists in spite of taking 1 or 2 painkillers daily which can affect the kidneys, TKR may be considered. Arthroscopic washout and debridement, osteotomy and Autologous chondrocyte implantation are other minimally invasive procedures that should be considered before TKR. Specialists always recommend utilising natural joints instead of getting them replaced.
