The basic requirements of healthy food include that it should be high in fiber, protein, and calcium; low in saturated fat, sodium and total sugar; and not contain trans fats or excessive amounts of carbohydrates. This list is admittedly quite general but it should help you identify the healthy options available for your family. Other important criteria for food to be considered "healthy" are the packaging and marketing claims which are often very misleading.
In comparison with processed foods, whole foods are typically more nutrient-dense — meaning they pack more vitamins per calorie — as well as better for your health in other ways such as reducing inflammation from all the added fats used to enhance flavour.
