August brings a lot of occasions for celebrating human relationships of all kinds. From celebrating brotherly love on Raksha Bandhan to expressing your friendly love for friends, August brings to you a lot of such opportunities and occasions.

One such occasion is National Sisters day to celebrate another day of love for your sisters. And yes, you are right in guessing that it has a bigger role to play than our regular sibling festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj, both of which are visibly or invisibly, male-centric.

National Sisters Day does not only celebrate the sisters from the same mothers. It is a day to celebrate female solidarity which is an important tool for overcoming the dominion of male in any society. You would have heard it often that a woman is a woman’s biggest enemy, and sometimes it’s true. Men have power and to be in good books of the person in authority, women end up fighting with each other. This happens, knowingly or unknowingly, among modern women too.

It is to change this attitude that the days like National Sisters Day is celebrated. It is to tell women all over that befriending each other is the first step that can be taken towards women empowerment and emancipation. Make other women your best friends and treat all women as your sisters regardless of the boundaries of race, class, and caste. That’s what National Sisters Day teaches us very subtly –the lesson of sisterhood.

So, Happy National Sisters day to all the lovely ladies out there!
