Perhaps because we still see the humble and wise Red of Shawshank Redemption in him?!
Yes, the majority of people on social media have gone awfully mum on the sexual misconduct and harassment charges against Morgan Freeman by 8 women. Even news websites who would jump in writing scathing editorials on such issues has taken a backseat. And all these are, in fact, surprising. More so, when compared to how #MeToo has shaped in recent times and how people went all guns blazing on disgraced Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Nev Schulman, R. Kelly, John Bailey, Ryan Seacrest and more. All of these men have been accused of sexual abuse on various occasions.
The same Morgan Freeman-like reaction came from people when Stan Lee was accused of sexual misconducts more than a month back by his masseuse. Why? Why is Morgan Freeman charges getting so meek reaction? No one is exactly know! Maybe we’re more modest when it comes to dealing with people who are and look elderly?
Or, maybe it’s becoming more evident that a part of global #MeToo movement is a farce with women coming out behind the curtains to accuse powerful men and get compensated. Even for the staunch followers of this movement, this is very well a possibility. Every day, we’re hearing more men getting accused of harassment and misconducts by some female. This is not to say that sexual predatory doesn’t exist in Hollywood (or any movie industry for that matter). It does. And it does on a large scale. However, with how the recent picture has unfolded, it’s hard not to see a pattern. It’s quite uncomfortable to trust these women blindly. It’s hard to believe that they didn’t say anything to the accused when such incident happened years back and now they are coming back to reclaim their pride in the shade of #MeToo movement.
Don’t get me wrong. Global #MeToo movement is as real, legit and essential as it gets. But blindly trusting all the claims is foolish. This is perhaps what’s happening when we’re dealing with now Morgan Freeman. People have decided to give him a benefit of doubt. Besides, Mr. Freeman has already apologized.
He issued a statement— “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.”
That being said, keeping the abuses and judgments away, people on social media must definitely be discussing these grave Morgan Freeman charges without donning a hat of a fan… or that of a respectful person who respects elderly. The claims of victims must well be investigated. And if Mr. Freeman is found guilty, he must be shamed and punished just as much as what happened with disgraced Harvey Weinstein. The same approach must be applied when dealing with Stan Lee, keeping our love for Avengers at bay for once.
