The season of Monsoon is the season of fairs. With cool breeze and moist weather all around, the season brings a new zeal of praying and worshiping of Lord Shiva. Shiva temples are decorated and are energized with the enthusiasm of festivals.

Worship of Lord Shiva:

Worshiping Lord Shiva is important in the month of Saavan (monsoon). Believers fast on every Monday of this month. While fasting, it’s adviced to read “Somwar vrat Katha” (Monday fasting Story).

The things that you need for the worship are: milk, curd, honey, sugar, rice, dry red vermillion, sandalwood, janeu (holy thread), Gangajal (water of holy river ganga), raksha sutra (the thread of protection), garland of flowers, and ashes.

Way of worshiping:

• Bathe the idol of Lord Shiva with Ganga Jal

• Then bathe the idol with milk, honey, sugar, curd and ashes, and wash with the water again.

• Apply tika on forehead with sandalwood and offer the idol red vermilion.

• Offer the idol rice, fruits, and flower garland.

• Roll the raksha sutra (the thread of protection) eleven times over the idols of Shiva and Parvati and put Janeu on Lord Shiva.

• Light the lamp with ghee and worship the lord.

• While worshiping, channelize all your concentration towards Lord Shiva and enchant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:

Om trayambak yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam urvarukmiv bandhanamrityurmukshiye mamritat
