If you are a driver who loves technology, then the new iOS 26.4 update is very exciting news for you. For a long time, we could only use Siri in our cars through Apple CarPlay, and let’s be honest, Siri is not always the smartest. But now, Apple has finally opened the doors for third-party AI like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to work directly on your car’s dashboard.
Here is a simple guide on how you can start using ChatGPT in your Apple CarPlay today.
1. Update Your iPhone to iOS 26.4
The first thing you must do is check your iPhone. This feature only works if you have the iOS 26.4 version (or the latest beta). Please navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and ensure your phone is updated. If you are still on an older version, you won't see these AI options in your car.
2. Install and Update the ChatGPT App
You need the official ChatGPT app from the App Store. If you already have it, please go to the App Store and click "Update." The developers at OpenAI had to make a special version of the app that follows Apple’s "CarPlay Developer Guide." This version is made specifically for driving so it doesn't distract you with too much text.
3. Connecting to CarPlay
Connect your iPhone to your car using a USB cable or via Wireless CarPlay. Once the CarPlay screen appears on your car’s display, you will see the ChatGPT icon among your other apps like Maps and Music.
4. How to Talk to ChatGPT While Driving
This is the most important part. Because of safety rules, you cannot type on the screen while driving.
-
Manual Start: You have to tap the ChatGPT icon on the car screen to open it.
-
Voice Mode: Once opened, the app will automatically enter "Voice Mode." You can ask it anything—like "Explain how a turbocharger works" or "Give me a recipe for butter chicken"—and it will talk back to you.
-
No Wake Word: Currently, you cannot say "Hey ChatGPT" to start it. You must tap the app first. However, if you have integrated ChatGPT into Siri via Apple Intelligence settings, you can sometimes ask Siri to "Ask ChatGPT," and it will work.
5. Why is this better than Siri?
ChatGPT is much better at having long conversations. If you are on a long drive from Delhi to Chandigarh and you are feeling bored, you can actually discuss ideas or learn a new topic with the AI. It feels like having a very smart friend sitting in the passenger seat.
Just remember, ChatGPT cannot control your car’s AC or open the windows—only Siri can do those system tasks. ChatGPT is there only for information and chatting. Also, always keep your eyes on the road!
