Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old. Scientists estimate an uncertainty of roughly ±50 million years, so you'll commonly see Earth's age rounded to about 4.5 billion years.

And 4.54 billion is one of those numbers that's almost impossible to genuinely imagine. Human civilisation feels ancient when we talk about thousands of years, but on Earth's timeline, our entire recorded history occupies an unbelievably tiny fraction.

Scientists didn't determine Earth's age by simply finding the oldest rock and checking how old it was.

The main technique is radiometric dating. Certain radioactive isotopes decay into other elements at predictable rates. By measuring parent and daughter isotopes in minerals and rocks, scientists can calculate how much time has passed since those materials formed.

Uranium-lead dating is particularly important because uranium isotopes decay into lead over extremely long, well-characterised timescales.

Basically, nature has left its own atomic clock inside ancient materials.

Meteorite Evidence

Meteorites provided some of the strongest evidence for determining Earth's age.

Why meteorites instead of just Earth rocks?

Earth is geologically active. Plate tectonics, erosion, melting and volcanism have repeatedly destroyed or transformed much of its earliest crust.

Meteorites, however, preserve material dating back to the formation of the solar system.

  • Earth gradually formed through collisions and accretion.

So Earth wasn't simply created as today's finished blue planet. It developed through an extremely violent early history.

Homo sapiens has existed for roughly 300,000 years, according to fossil evidence.

Early estimates were influenced by religious chronologies and limited geological knowledge. Later, scientists began studying rock layers, erosion, sedimentation and Earth's cooling to estimate its age.

During the 20th century, radiometric dating transformed the question because scientists finally had a reliable physical method for measuring geological time.

In 1956, geochemist Clair Patterson published an estimate of about 4.55 billion years using lead isotope measurements from meteorites—remarkably close to the accepted figure today.
