🇮🇳 What is the reservation system?
India’s reservation (affirmative action) system provides quotas in education and government jobs for historically disadvantaged groups, mainly:
- SC (Scheduled Castes)
- ST (Scheduled Tribes)
- OBC (Other Backward Classes)
It’s rooted in addressing centuries of inequality tied to the Caste system in India.
Why was reservation introduced?
The goal was not to replace merit, but to level the playing field.
For a long time:
- Certain communities had limited access to education
- Social discrimination blocked opportunities
- Wealth, networks, and schooling were uneven
Reservation tries to compensate for this structural disadvantage.
Does reservation “beat talent”?
This idea usually comes from situations like:
- A higher-scoring candidate doesn’t get a seat/job
- A lower-scoring candidate (reserved category) does
But this raises an important question:
Is “talent” only exam marks?
Because:
- Access to coaching, schools, and environment heavily affects scores
- A student scoring slightly lower despite major disadvantages may still be highly capable
