With time everything changes and sometimes things turn out to be better or sometimes things turn out to be worse. In recent years, several changes in the Indian education system have come up. The reservation system is one of them. It is a drawback for our education system indeed as it is killing talents day by day. Especially in degree colleges where the future generations are supposed to build their talents in a good way so that it helps our society, the reservation system is destroying all those talents. The young minds have some innovative ideas, and talents but this reservation quota is hampering this quality. This needs to be changed as students are focusing more on marks than on knowledge. Since 1982, the reservation system has been implemented. It has been declared by The Government of India that 15% of jobs would be reserved for Scheduled castes and 7.5% of job seats would be reserved by Scheduled Tribes.

Letsdiskuss

As a result of this reservation system, the actual talent is getting dumped. A student with 94% of marks is compared with a student with 65% of marks as the latter one has a scheduled caste quota. This is the way talent is getting killed day by day. It is shattering the future of our education system. The reservation system and quota system should be stopped so that hidden and real talents get the opportunity and equality prevails. The deserved one should be given a chance rather than the reserved one for the betterment of our future generations and upcoming career.

I have seen so many brilliant students losing their hopes and getting disheartened as they don't get the seat they deserved due to reservation system. Candidate has to compromise their dreams and settle for something below the bar. This is brutal truth that by keeping this reservation system we are doing injustice on the gems of our country. Whereas on the other side, the person who might not the appropriate candidate is given preference which will lead to so many consequences. So most of our brilliant minds are plannning to go abroad and showcase their talent where they are appreciated. Save our minds! Make justice to all students, irrespective of which caste he/she belongs to, give them chance as per their talents. Instead we can keep reservations for candidates who are below poverty line, who are financially unstable, that is the only reservation which should exist I feel as the financially weak candidates also should get required resources. Remove all these barriers and treat each person equally. Give your support to the deserved one's, not the reserved one's.

India’s reservation system aims to correct historical inequality, but critics argue it affects merit due to quotas. Supporters say it creates equal opportunities, balancing social justice with fair competition, not replacing talent.

🇮🇳 What is the reservation system?

India’s reservation (affirmative action) system provides quotas in education and government jobs for historically disadvantaged groups, mainly:

  • SC (Scheduled Castes)
  • ST (Scheduled Tribes)
  • OBC (Other Backward Classes)

It’s rooted in addressing centuries of inequality tied to the Caste system in India.

Why was reservation introduced?

The goal was not to replace merit, but to level the playing field.

For a long time:

  • Certain communities had limited access to education
  • Social discrimination blocked opportunities
  • Wealth, networks, and schooling were uneven

Reservation tries to compensate for this structural disadvantage.

Does reservation “beat talent”?

This idea usually comes from situations like:

  • A higher-scoring candidate doesn’t get a seat/job
  • A lower-scoring candidate (reserved category) does

But this raises an important question:

Is “talent” only exam marks?

Because:

  • Access to coaching, schools, and environment heavily affects scores
  • A student scoring slightly lower despite major disadvantages may still be highly capable

Many people feel that the reservation system in India sometimes overlooks merit, especially in competitive exams and jobs. They argue that candidates with higher marks may miss opportunities while others benefit from reserved quotas. This can create frustration among students who believe selection should be purely based on performance. However, others say reservation is necessary to correct historical inequalities and give equal chances to disadvantaged communities. The real issue is balancing fairness and opportunity. Instead of removing reservation, improving education quality and creating more opportunities for everyone could reduce this conflict. In the end, both talent and social justice are important, and the system should aim to support both without making anyone feel left behind.

Some people believe the reservation system in India can sometimes feel unfair to talented students. They think that even after working very hard, they might lose seats or jobs to someone with lower marks because of quotas. This creates a feeling that merit is not always the main factor. At the same time, others argue that reservation is important because many communities were historically disadvantaged and still lack equal access to education and resources. So it’s not just about marks, but also about giving everyone a fair starting point. The real challenge is finding a balance where deserving candidates succeed while also supporting those who genuinely need help to grow and compete equally.
