Anxiety and depression affects a significant percentage of the population, mostly women. It is known to cause much distress in relationships. People in a relationship may be reluctant to admit their stress and all its unpleasant effects on the other person. They often feel embarrassed about how they are feeling or what they need to do to cope up with it, so it can lead to a lot of misunderstandings between partners who might not understand each other’s needs or what is expected from them. Anxiety and depression are very common, but they can be treated.

A good way to approach anxiety-depression in relationships is to encourage your partner to talk about what is bothering him or her. It will help your partner understand and recognize his or her feelings and how he or she should deal with them. You can ask him or her a lot of questions that you think are very useful. Maybe you want to ask 'What do you feel like when I get upset? What are your needs right now? Do you have anyone you can talk with about it?' This step should not be done for the sake of asking questions, rather it helps your partner cope up with his or her anxiety and depression.

If your partner is not able to talk about it, you can help him or her by providing support and encouragement. You can offer your understanding and show him or her that he or she is not alone in this situation. But this can only be done if you have also been through the same feelings. If you haven't, do not expect yourself to tell your partner exactly what he or she needs to do in order to feel better. You are here as a support point for your partner, but when he or she has reached the point where he or she understands his/her own feelings and needs, it is up to him/her what they decide to do next and how they deal with their problems.

How Anxiety and Depression May Affect Your Relationships

There are many things that could help your partner to recover from anxiety and depression, such as exercise, spending time with other people, taking medication if needed, etc. For a lot of people, the hardest thing to do is to face their feelings and deal with them head on.

You and your partner can plan activities that will help them cope up with anxiety and depression. Activities should be fun but also productive. It would also be a good idea for you both to talk about it and decide what you will do together in order to cope up with anxiety. You might want to go out in a group of friends or family members so that they feel less alone in their stressful situations.
