The important thing is not how to talk to your daughter but when to talk. Most girls get their first period between the age of 11 to 14. But it can start anywhere from the time they turn 10-years-old. Hence, it is important to talk about it sometime before so that she can process the information and does not panic when it actually happens.
Try be to candid and don’t treat this subject as ‘super serious’ and try to slip in the important information while having a friendly chat. You can refer to movies, internet and books to help her understand this natural phenomenon better and also, don’t overwhelm her with all the information in one go. Try to keep the entire ‘period talk’ informal and not make her conscious about it.
If she asks such questions, do boys also get periods? when will it stop? Is the blood loss harmful for my body? should I discuss about it with my friends? can I eat everything when I am menstruating? will it pain too much? then don't shy away and be prepared to answer a wide range of questions from your daughter. It would only help her gain more clarity about menstruation and make her confident about her body. The key is to stay patient and answer all her queries with a smile.
