It was after many years that BJP gained power at the center in 2014. The fact that half of its promises to win the votes were false and still remain unfulfilled, is another story. The use of media for popularizing attractive slogans and messages to win people’s trust and votes, this was very well exemplified through 2014 elections.
It is often said that the Indian public has a poor memory, that it forgets the promises made by the parties and is ready to be fooled every time a new promise is made. In last elections, BJP had the slogan “Acche Din Aayenge”, and since the party’s win, the slogan has only given satisfaction to meme-makers and social media trollers.
Congress criticized BJP for the Rafale scam and raised the slogan of “Chowkidaar Chor Hai”. This forced BJP to come to the back foot. To retaliate, BJP’s media sale has raised the slogan of “Mai Bhi Chowkidaar”, and tried to associate it with every honest and hardworking Indian.
This time, however, people have well understood the tactics of the party and the slogan is not getting much attention this time. It should be said, though, that it was a good scheme to win public once again. Now, how much success it will gain, that only time will tell.
One thing is certain, BJP can’t fool public again on the basis of one more attractive slogan.
