This rape case is absolutely more than enough to open the eyes of all those ministers who refused the reports claiming India to be the most unsafe country for women. This case represents the general situation all over the country. That women are not even safe at the homes of their acquaintances is proved in India time and again.

This time also, the accused in the father of the victim’s childhood friend. She was a regular visitor to her home and was well acquainted with the whole family. It was a place that was supposed to be “safe” for her. For her parents too. A girl’s childhood friend’s home is one of those rare places where she is allowed to go without any questions or second thoughts by her parents. A place where she can stay back as much time as she wants. But now even this seems a failed concept. The victim was sleeping over at her friend’s home when the incident happened, as she reports to the police.

So yes, no matter what our ministers say about the development our country is making for women, and no matter how many policies come for women safety, education, or what not, the truth is India is a failed nation when it comes to safeguarding the other half of its population.
