Technology – or Artificial Intelligence (AI), to be more precise – could destroy humanity, claimed renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. He said to BBC, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” He is not alone with this concern. Even Elon Musk has said somewhat the same thing- “I think we should be very careful about Artificial Intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful.”
And they all might very well be right, not because they are the leaders in their respective fields and they know what they are saying. But because that’s what it seems like today. We already have heard countless news of technology, one way or other, playing foul and emerging as a reason behind people’s death. Unless the leaders around the world stride forward to take note of it and make policies and regulations around it to keep things under control, it will get even worse.
Ambitious and futuristic tasks that of Facebook, Google, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft and Apple should be scrutinized and kept under the spotlight all the time. AI should be dealt with great caution. Watching Terminator and I, Robot are fun as long as they are behind the screen.
Is Stephen Hawking right about aliens?
