I would say Virat Kohli is one of the best test cricketers in India today. It’s well known!!! However, calling him ‘the best’ in the team based on his most recent performance would be quite unjust for other players.

First, talking about Virat’s knock against England in the 2ndday of the first test, it was beyond exceptional. If someone who really understands cricket, they would certainly call Kohli’s 149 knock – at a time when India was slipping – as one of the finest test performances. He further cemented his legacy in his already storied book, outlining it’s not just his aggressive approach but also his class and swift skills that set him apart from other best test cricketers of today and yesterday.
That being said though, if you look at the current line-up of Indian test team, there are a handful of exceptional players who can easily rival Kohli’s exciting ton. Surely, they all failed to deliver on the day when it mattered the most. But you cannot out-count them just based on one inning. The likes of KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane are in their whole different league, oozing of class and excellence.
If you ask me now, when it comes to the best test cricketers, I would rank Rahane and Rahul well-above Kohli. On their best days, you can actually see their innings paralleling the legacy of Lara, Tendulkar, and Hussey.

In short, Virat Kohli is one of the best test cricketers in India. But he is no way “the best”. The captain has a long way to go; at least in the test. Hopefully, he continues this same pace and form in the upcoming crucial test matches against England.
