A lipoma is a slow-growing, lump that contains fat and is most often situated between the skin and the underlying muscle layer. A lipoma has the following properties-
-usually small and <5cm but may grow and become large
-feels doughy
-usually isn't painful but sometimes can be painful.
-moves with slight finger pressure.
Lipomas are usually detected in middle age. It may be multiple in number.
CAUSES
Not known. But genetic factors may play a role.
lipoma is different from cancer and usually is harmless. Usually, it doesn't need treatment, but if the lipoma is painful or is growing or due to cosmetic reasons, it may be removed after consulting a surgeon.
