Developed by Surrey NanoSystems in 2014, Vantablack absorbs up to 99.965% of visible light, one of the darkest substances ever created.

Its name stands for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array Black, built from carbon nanotubes roughly 10,000 times thinner than a human hair, packed so densely almost no light escapes.

The effect can be disorienting in person. Objects coated in it lose all depth and texture, flattening into what looks like a hole cut into space.

Surrey NanoSystems doesn't even classify Vantablack as a colour or pigment, officially calling it a super-black coating because it works through light absorption rather than reflecting any wavelength back.

Its exclusive licensing to sculptor Anish Kapoor sparked an art-world feud, prompting rival artist Stuart Semple to develop a competing black paint Kapoor was banned from using.

It didn't stay the record holder forever either. In 2019, MIT unveiled a coating absorbing 99.995% of light, ten times darker still, later used to coat a $2 million diamond for an art piece.
