In ecology, the term habitat refers to the collection of resources, physical and biological variables that exist in a certain location to help a species survive and reproduce. A habitat is a place where an organism spends all year or for a brief length of time in order to locate a mate. The habitat provides all of the necessities for an animal's survival, such as food and shelter. The habitat of a species can be thought of as the physical expression of its biological niche.
