Hubble space telescope is one of the many space telescopes that was sent outside earth’s atmosphere to capture images of what is out there. This particular telescope, launched in 1990,is known to be one of the best and most versatile that has played a pivotal role in many breakthroughs in astrophysics, including in determining the rate of expansion of the universe, a theory tossed by Alexander Friedman in 1922.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HSB) is named after an American astronomer Edwin Hubble, who is often regarded as one of the most important astronomers in the history for his spectacular contribution in the field.
Decades later, HSB is still orbiting the earth and is considered as one of NASA’s great observatories. Although recently news came that the telescope is running in Safe Mode due to some malfunction in gyroscope, NASA has confirmed in a release that everything is working perfectly well and that the instrument is “expected to produce excellent science for years to come.”
Hubble space telescope is the only space telescope till date that can be serviced in Space. Until 2011, it has circled the earth for 115,000 times. The telescope is responsible to reveal that the universe is really 13 to 14 years old.
Over the years, it has sent some remarkable images (in black and white, which is turned into colourful images by combining two and more exposures). Here are some of the images courtesy of Hubblesite.org:
