Linux is also an operating system same as a Windows operating system But linux is open source It is an OS which is based on Linux kernel. The main advantage of linux OS is that programmers can modify the kernel as per their requirement.

Advantage of LINUX

1 It offers free OS

2 any one can modify Linux kernel as their requirement

3 Linux is a highly secure operating system.

Linux is an Open-source community developed Operating System for computers, servers, mobile devices, and mainframes. There are two major components of the Linux kernel and the shell. the kernel is the core of the OS which schedules processes and interfaces directly with the hardware.

An operating system is a software that connects hardware and software together and then allows user to perform various functions. Its basically because of the operating system that a person is able to access, alter and manage different applications using PCs, Laptops, Mobile phones etc.

If you search in the market you will find a lot of companies with different operating systems. For smartphones, the most common operating systems are: Android and IOS. If you look for desktops and laptops the most popular one is Windows. However there are a lot of other operating systems present in the market. For eg: Linux , MacOS etc.

Created by Linus Torvalds, Linux originated in 1991. While, Linus was still in his college, he came up with the idea of Linux and started working on it as a project. With the help of few volunteers and small funds Linux was finally completed as a fully functional kernel.

Linux quite resembles Unix ( another operating system) but it was developed without Unix codes. The main objective behind developing Linux was for studies and development,thus keeping it as an open license model. The share of this operating system in the market is quite low, about 1.82%. However, it is extensively used in supercomputers, embedded systems and servers. In fact it is used in supercomputers more than its contemporary ,Unix. This operating system is also taken in use by small scale energy efficient computers.

The major distributors of this operating system are Ubuntu, Chrome OS, Red Hat and Google's Android.
