Non-marking footwear essentially refers to footwear having soles that don't scratch the surface of indoor courts. In order to avoid leaving a mark on the court, non-marking shoes have flat, not overly-hard bottoms, no cleats, and little roughness. Non-marking soles are typically white or none-black, although they can also be black if the texture is right.
As there is a lot of pressure and movement on the court when playing tennis, regular shoes are certain to cause stains on our surfaces. This will result in surface damage to the surfacing and a negative user experience due to scratches or shoe marks. We require the wearing of shoes with non-marking soles in order to combat this.
