PPC is an acronym for "pay-per-click." It's a marketing system where you only pay if your advertisement is clicked on. The advertiser pays the publisher when the user clicks on the link to their website.

In other words, it's a system where advertisers only pay for results, not traffic. You set up an account with Google Adwords, Yahoo! Search Marketing or Bing Ads and place advertisements on relevant websites and in online magazines as well as via sponsored tweets (Twitter). When someone clicks on your ad - that's when you pay.
