This fellowship scheme can be seen as a collaboration between industry and academia to provide monetary help, as well as professional guidance to the research fellows. The scheme is a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) between Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), which is an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Under this scheme, the research scholars doing PhD get double the money as compared to what they would get otherwise. This estimates to be the double of the JRF/SRF that government gives to the research scholars, which is Rs. 36,400 per month, maximum. The scheme allows the government to pay one half of this money, while the other half is given by a partner company which works closely with the scholar and guides her/him. The candidates now, can apply anytime within 14 months of their PhD registration.
The response to the Prime Minister’s Fellowship scheme for Doctoral Research under Public-Private-Partnership is getting an overwhelming response from various institutions and industrialists, helping scholars with both money, and professional guidance.
