Many people think incense sticks and dhoop sticks are the same, but there are actually a few clear differences between them. Both are used for fragrance, meditation, and religious purposes, but their structure and fragrance strength are different.
First, incense sticks (agarbatti) usually have a thin bamboo stick inside, and the aromatic material is rolled around it. These sticks burn slowly and release a light and pleasant fragrance, which is why they are commonly used at home, in offices, or during daily prayers.
On the other hand, dhoop sticks do not contain a bamboo stick. They are made from a mixture of herbs, resins, wood powder, and essential oils, pressed into a solid stick. Because of this composition, dhoop sticks usually produce stronger smoke and a more intense aroma, which is often preferred during temple rituals or meditation sessions.
Another difference is the burning experience. Incense sticks give a subtle and long-lasting fragrance, while dhoop sticks create a deeper and more traditional aroma.
