In Bollywood’s latest suspense thriller, Badla, director Sujoy Ghosh has come back with the same Kahaani and Kahaani 2 vibes. The storytelling in the movie is breathtakingly sharp, and the twists and turns are well-crafted.

Even, for those who have seen the Spanish blockbuster of which Badla is an official remake, there is a freshness in the movie to experience along with a very strong cast. Talking of cast, although the major part of the story is on the shoulders of just two actors –Amitabh Bachchan and Tapsee Panu, there are other excellent actors who have done full justice to whatever minor role they were given. Main ones in them are Manav Kaul and Amrita Singh-both being a delight to the audience’s eyes since forever.

Tapsee Panu is playing the role of a businesswoman, having an extra-marital affair with Arjun, who dies and for whose murder she is convicted. Amitabh Bachchan here is a veteran lawyer who has never lost any case in his 40-year career. He is brought back from his retirement to have his finale with this murder mystery by the advocate seeing the case formerly, played by Manav Kaul.

We have already seen the duo of Panu and Bachchan giving us a spectacular cinematic experience together in Pink, and here they are not to recreate their previous roles for sure. In Badla, things are darker and grimmer with two murders having been taken place.

On surface, the movie may allude to the quotes of Mahabharata regarding revenge, truths, web of lies and the half-truth, but those who have read the famous author would be able to see the tinge of Agatha Christie setting and plot in the movie.

Badla, for most of its duration, is set inside a room, where there are present both the mouse and the cat of this cat-and-mouse story. Amitabh Bachchan tells Panu that whatever she tells him will be the truth for him, but that in no way means that he is going to ignore the lies and the hidden truths.
He is not the fool who doesn’t know the difference between a truth and a lie.

Despite Bollywood not being very good at handling the whodunit plots, the movie succeeds in keeping the suspense until the last minute of revelation.

There is a twist after every minute, and you will wonder throughout, who, if not Tapsee Panu?

Movie’s script is tightly written, the Scottish settings are quite picturesque and set the mood perfectly for the murder mystery to unfold.

The movie should not be missed at any cost, according to me.
