Actress Swara Bhaskar has written an open letter to Padmaavat director Sanjay Leela Bhansali decrying the glorification of Sati and Jauhar which denies women right to live.

After watching the film the 29 year old actress poured her heart out. She began the letter by congratulating and praising the director for his film Padmaavat and later went on to call him out for glorifying such practices without giving them the right context.

Swara took particular offence to Bhansali’s treatment of the final scene were Deepika Padukone’s character Rani Padmaavati commits herself to fire to protect her honor.

The actress wrote that practices like Sati, Jauhar , honour killing deny women equality personhood humanity and most importantly the right to life and therefore, it should not be glorified.

The final scene of the movie according to Swara, shows Jauhar in a positive light. It send out the message that it is better for a women to commit suicide rather than to have her purity intact. She points throughout history a women honor pride and sacredness has been attached to her “genitals” and the purity of it.

Rani Padmavati did Johar in 13th century!! Its been seven centuries....

In this time and age, women live and die for themselves only. I have no idea why is everyone taking this movie so seriously. SBL is a grand director and Dipika is a great actress....that's all. The movie, the characters, the theme ...everything is 700 years ago. Who cares!!
