There were certain doubts about it since yesterday, as the crescent moon was not seen. According to Islamic calendar, the new moon of Muharram-ul-Haram, 1440 Hijri, was born on 9th September, and the new Islamic year was said to be start either from 11th or from 12th of September.

A meeting of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee met yesterday, at the meteorological department in Islamabad to sight the crescent moon. The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Committee Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman.

So now we have the exact timing of when Muslims are going to enter 1440 Hijri, which is alternatively known as Arabic New Year and Hijri New year.

One more meeting that was held for the same predictions was the zonal committee of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) at building of Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was assisted by the PMD, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, and Pakistan Navy, as the decision was to decide the time and date of further rituals in Pakistan and other countries having Muslim devotees.

The PMD had earlier forecasted that there is little chance of Muharram, the second holy month of the next Islamic lunar calendar, beginning on September 11. But it is beginning today in late evening.
It was PMD who forcasted the birth of the new moon of Muharram 1440 on crossing conjunction point at 23:02 PST on September 9. (Source: The News).

The second holy month of Islamic Calendar is marked as Muharram, which follows the first Holy month, Ramadan. Muharram means "forbidden" and Muslims fast on the ninth and tenth day in this month.
