Talking strictly about the ratings—Republic TV is at the top,
followed by Times Now, India Today, NDTV 24/7, and News18. Though, the reports
have emerged that Republic TV has followed the wrong mean to get more views
than the rivals. Note: this is the rating in the English news genre.
Let’s talk about personality-cults in the Indian media—the
star anchors on different news channels. Arnab Goswami of Republic TV is a
highly polarizing name on the scene, accused of being pro-government and
pro-right wing. Rahul Shivshankar of Times Now is called as wannabe-Arnab.
Rahul Kanwal of India Today is a renowned name, who often
generates heat for questioning the government and ruling parties. Rajdeep
Sardesai of India Today is known as anti-Modi. Bhupendra Chaubey of News18 is
also sometimes known as anti-govt for his stands on some issues.
As for NDTV 24/7, ever since the departure of Barkha Dutt, Vikram
Chandra has become a star anchor of its Primetime. However, the channel has
maintained its stand of being news-centric instead of personality-centric.
Unlike other channels where “debates” happen, NDTV 24/7 hosts sensible
discussions. Although it is often called pro-leftists, the channel is majorly
accredited as neutral.
So if you’re talking about the best Indian English news channels,
in terms of their coverage, reporting, experience, ethics and overall
performance, NDTV 24/7 wins the race by big margin.
