Italian explorer Christopher Columbus is credited with the discovery of America in 1942 after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean for 10 weeks. Columbus was the very first European to see the Bahamas archipelago, followed by the island of Hispaniola, which is now divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Later journeys took him further southern, to South and Central America. He never made it near what is today known as the United States.
