Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University, in 1998. The idea of Google actually began a few years earlier in the mid-1990s when both of them were researching ways to improve how information on the internet was organized and searched.

At that time, search engines existed, but they were not very accurate. Most search results were based on how many times a keyword appeared on a webpage, not on how useful or important the page actually was. Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to solve this problem by creating a system that could rank web pages based on their relevance and importance.

While working at Stanford, they developed a research project called “BackRub.” This system analyzed how websites were linked to each other. The idea was simple but powerful: if many important websites link to a particular page, that page is likely to be valuable. This concept later became the foundation of Google’s famous algorithm called PageRank, named after Larry Page.

As their project improved, they realized it had huge potential beyond academic research. In 1998, they decided to turn it into a real company. They initially operated from a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California, which is now a symbol of many successful tech startups. They raised their first investment of about $100,000 from Andy Bechtolsheim, one of the co-founders of Sun Microsystems. This early funding helped them officially launch Google Inc.

The name “Google” came from a mathematical term called “googol,” which means the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name was chosen to represent the huge amount of information the search engine aimed to organize.

Google quickly became popular because it delivered faster and more accurate search results compared to other search engines of that time. Its simple homepage design, clean interface, and powerful search technology made it stand out.

Over the years, Google expanded far beyond search. It introduced products like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube (later acquired), Android, and Google Drive, becoming one of the most influential technology companies in the world. Today, it operates under its parent company Alphabet Inc.

In conclusion, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 as a research project that evolved into a global tech giant. It began with a simple idea-to organize the world’s information-and has grown into one of the most powerful companies in history.

Google's Founding Story

Google, the renowned American multinational corporation and technology giant, was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. These visionary individuals initiated Google's journey in 1998 while they were pursuing their PhDs at Stanford University in California. Larry Page, born in East Lansing, Michigan, on March 26, 1973, and Sergey Brin, originally from Moscow, Russia, born on August 21, 1973, joined forces to revolutionize the way information is accessed on the internet.

Their collaboration led to the development of a groundbreaking search engine that utilized a unique algorithm to determine the importance of web pages based on their link structure. This innovative approach, which treated links as votes to establish the significance of a page, laid the foundation for what would become Google's core technology. Initially named "BackRub," their search engine evolved into the iconic Google we know today, a name derived from the mathematical term "googol," symbolizing vast amounts of information.

The duo's dedication to enhancing information retrieval on the internet attracted significant attention, leading to an investment of $100,000 from Andy Bechtolsheim, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, in August 1998. This pivotal investment marked the official birth of Google Inc. and propelled Page and Brin from their dorm rooms to their first office – a garage in Menlo Park, California, owned by Susan Wojcicki, who later became the CEO of YouTube.

Google's unconventional beginnings, characterized by clunky desktop computers, a ping pong table, and a vibrant atmosphere, embodied the spirit of innovation and creativity that continues to define the company. The founders' commitment to doing things differently was evident from the start, with their first server crafted from Lego bricks and the playful "Doodle" on the homepage announcing their absence at the Burning Man Festival.

As Google rapidly expanded, hiring engineers, introducing new products, and embracing a culture of unconventional thinking, the company outgrew its humble garage space and relocated to its current headquarters in Mountain View, California, known as "The Googleplex." This move marked a significant milestone in Google's evolution, reflecting its commitment to pushing boundaries and seeking better solutions.

In summary, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two visionary computer scientists and entrepreneurs, founded Google in 1998 with a mission to revolutionize information retrieval on the Internet. Their innovative approach to search engine technology, marked by the development of PageRank and the evolution of Google from a garage startup to a global tech giant, underscores their enduring legacy as pioneers in the digital age.
