One more athlete has scripted history in Asian Games 2018. This time, it is Swapna Burman, hailing from Jalapigudi, a village in North Bengal, India. She has won the gold for India in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in Heptathlon.
Swapna Burman’s life had been full of struggles since the beginning. Due to the so-called “abnormality” of having six toes in each of her foot, running and walking for her was always a painful and struggling task. Coming for a family whose economic condition was not good enough to support her sport, she managed to continue it with the scholarship of 1 lakh 50 thousand, that Swapna won in 2016. Despite all these struggles, her winning a gold in Asian Games 2018 is no less than a wonder in itself.
The 21 year old, scored 6026 points in 7 days in total. Apart from the gold in Heptathlon, she also won High Jump with 1003 points and Javelin Throw with 872 points. Along with this, she won Shot Put with 707 points and Long Jump with 865 points. She earned fifth and seventh position in 100 m and 200 m events respectively.
While Swapna Burman failed to perform well last year in 800 m event at Asian Athletics Championship, achieved the fourth position this year along with winning the gold in Heptathlon.
I wish Swapna Burman good luch for her future and that she keeps making India proud like this.
