Who is the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo?

The first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo is Avani Chaturvedi. She achieved this historic milestone on 19 February 2018 by successfully completing a solo sortie in a MiG-21 Bison from an Indian Air Force base in Gujarat.

Avani Chaturvedi was one of the first three women selected as fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force, alongside Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh. She flew a Russian made fighter jet MiG-21 Bison for 30 minutes at the Jamnagar airbase to achieve this remarkable feat. MiG-21 Bison is an aircraft that is known for its highest landing and take-off speed (340Kmph) in the world.

Along with Avani, two other women Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh underwent fighter pilot training in the Indian Air force. Growing up in a small town named Deolond near Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, Avani Chaturvedi never thought even in her wildest dreams that one day she would become the first-ever Indian woman to fly a supersonic jet all alone.
