Peshwa Shrimant Baji Rao II was the Maratha Empire's 13th and final Peshwa. From 1795 to 1818, he was responsible . The Maratha nobles established him as a puppet monarch, and his growing influence compelled him to flee Poona and negotiate the Treaty of Bassein (1802) with British. This led to the Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803–1805), wherein British triumphed and restored him because the titular Peshwa. After British supported the Gaekwad nobles during a revenue-sharing dispute, Baji Rao II joined the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817.
