Gangubai Kathiawadi is an upcoming bollywood movie inspired by the life of Gangubai Kothewali. Actress Alia Bhatt will be seen playing the titular role. This upcoming hindi movie is based on a chapter of author and journalist Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia queens of Mumbai. The director of the film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali launched movie teaser on his birthday and gave viewers first glimpse of this biographical film.
Gangubai Kathiawadi was one of the famous women in Mumbai in 1940s -1960s. Her real name was Ganga Harjeevandas, born and bought up in village of Kathiawad, Gujarat. At a very young age of 16, she ran away from her house to secretly marry her father’s accountant, Ramnik Lal. They came to Mumbai where Ramnik sold her for Rs 500 to a brothel in Kamathipura and forced her into prostitution. However, she got over this rough phase of her life and stood as a prominent name in dominating the brothels of Kamathipura. She made connections in underworld. Karim Lala. an underworld don, accepted Gangubai as her rakhi sister when she was brutally raped by one of his goons twice. Karim Lala operated many extortion rackets, liquor dens, gambling etc and was a big name in underworld. He handed her rakhi sister the reigns of Kamathipura, after which she became a Mafia queen. She went on to operate several brothels in that area and sex rackets in Heera mandi too.

Zaidi in his book noted Gangubai never kept any girl in her brothel against their consent. She was known for giving priority to women over money and did a lot for sex workers. She was also known for wearing sarees with golden border and blouse with gold buttons. She took surname kothewali after winning local"gharwali"elections and at a young age became brothel madam. She made a powerful speech addressing Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and raised the issues of sex workers and prostitution, also asked for their recognition.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has strongly portrayed Alia Bhatt’s character in the movie. The dialogue “Gangu tu chand hai aur chand rahegi” is perfectly complementing with her acting in the newly released movie teaser.
