As per sources, the Boycott started trending after a section of the Internet dug out a bit from Amir's 2015 interview. In this interview, Amir talked about "growing intolerance" in the country. Amir had said, "As a person, as part of India, every day we read in the papers what is going on, we see it on the news, and certainly, I have been frightened. I can't deny it. I have been frightened by a number of incidents".

Amir also added, "When I chat with Kiran at home, she says, 'Should we shift out of India?' That's a big word for Kiran to make. Kiran fears for her child. She is concerned about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels afraid to open the newspapers every day".

After that, Amir clarified that his remarks were taken out of context, and his intention wasn't to hurt anyone. "I was impaired, and along with me, many people have been hurt because of this misunderstanding. He says the media represent everything with twisted words. I request you all that please don't do this and support us. I don't mean that. I am just sharing my thoughts which came out not telling you to leave India.

Amir also said, "Let me tell you that I never said that kind of term. I was born in India, and I am willing to die in India. I never thought about leaving India. Neither Kiran nor will I consider about it. Frankly, when I stay away from India for two weeks, I get homesick."

So, all of this happened in 2015, and now the clip is circulating on the Internet, and people started boycotting the movie.
