A dry cell is a type of electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Although most people use dry cells regularly, many are unaware of the components inside them and how they are constructed.

The outer container of a traditional dry cell is made of zinc, which serves a dual purpose. It acts as the container for the cell and also functions as the negative electrode (anode). Since zinc participates in the chemical reaction that generates electricity, it gradually wears away as the cell is used.

Between the zinc container and the carbon rod is a moist paste known as the electrolyte. This paste is typically made from ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. Unlike liquid electrolytes used in some other batteries, this paste-like electrolyte reduces the risk of leakage and makes the cell easier to transport and use in portable devices.

A separator layer is also present inside the cell. Its purpose is to keep the electrolyte and active materials properly distributed while preventing direct contact between the electrodes, which could cause a short circuit.

The top of the dry cell is sealed with insulating materials such as wax or plastic to prevent moisture loss and protect the internal components. The carbon rod is connected to the positive terminal, while the zinc container forms the negative terminal.
