Do board exams really decide your future or not?

Yesterday, Class 10th CBSE results were announced. My brother gor 86%, which was just 1% less to my cousin brother. I remember when I was in class 10th, I got 95% and everyone around me told that I can pursue medicine and become a doctor. Everyone in the family gathered and discussed how I can be such a good doctor. But I chose something that I like, that I have interest in, and today I am actually enjoying and loving what I do.

See, it's not about your board exams percentage or how well you scored enough to get PCM. It's about how much efforts you have put, and how you are thinking forward. Many of my batchmates who didn't get as much percentage are now dsitting on a good package from top companies. Because, ultimately, it's your skills that matter. Your skills make you the asset for the company or even if you decide your own venture.

Short answer? No, board exams don’t decide your entire future-but they can definitely influence your immediate next step.

In India, board exams are treated like this huge life-defining moment, and that pressure makes it feel like everything depends on those marks. To some extent, they do matter. Good scores can open doors to certain colleges, courses, or scholarships, so they can shape the direction you take right after school.

But the idea that they lock your future forever is just not true.

Real life is much more flexible than that. People change careers, learn new skills, switch fields, and grow in completely different directions over time. Someone who didn’t score well in boards can still build a strong career through alternative paths-like skill-based learning, competitive exams later, or even entrepreneurship. At the same time, someone with top marks isn’t guaranteed success if they don’t keep learning or adapting.

What board exams actually test is how well you performed in a structured academic setup at a particular time. They don’t measure creativity, problem-solving in real situations, communication skills, or resilience-qualities that matter a lot in the long run.

I think the bigger issue is how society reacts to those results. Marks often become a label, and that’s where the real pressure comes from. But once you move past that phase-college, work life-nobody really asks about your board percentage again.

So yeah, board exams are important, but they’re not the final verdict on your life. They’re more like a checkpoint, not the destination.
