If I talk from a science perspective, then yes, dark chocolate is generally considered better for stress management than milk chocolate. And honestly, my personal answer would also be yes.

I remember last year when I went to give my CAT exam. Before the exam, one of my academy teachers told us to carry a small piece of dark chocolate and eat it before entering the exam hall because most students would be feeling stressed and anxious. That was probably the first time I seriously thought about dark chocolate as something more than just a snack.

The thing is, dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa compared to milk chocolate. Because of that, it also contains more antioxidants and beneficial compounds that are often linked to mood and stress management. That is one reason why nutritionists and dietitians frequently recommend dark chocolate over milk chocolate.

At the same time, I think there is another side to this discussion. Milk chocolate may not have the same nutritional profile as dark chocolate, but it offers something different—comfort and familiarity. Most of us grew up eating milk chocolate. It was probably one of the first chocolates we ever tasted. Because of that, many people associate it with happy memories, celebrations, rewards, and childhood experiences.

Even chocolate advertisements have always presented milk chocolate as something that makes people feel happy, relaxed, and emotionally satisfied. So when people eat milk chocolate, part of the enjoyment may come from that emotional connection as well.

To be honest, when I personally have to choose between the two, I often end up picking milk chocolate because I simply enjoy the taste more and feel more connected to it. However, if the question is specifically about stress reduction, I would still give the edge to dark chocolate.

So my answer would be this: science generally supports dark chocolate as the better option for stress management because of its higher cocoa content and beneficial compounds. However, milk chocolate can still feel comforting and relaxing because of the emotional connection many people have with it. In the end, dark chocolate may be better for stress, but milk chocolate often wins when it comes to comfort.

Dark chocolate wins every time. To get the stress-reducing flavonoids, you want at least 70% cocoa. Milk chocolate has too much sugar and dairy, which can actually cause energy spikes and dips, potentially increasing anxiety.
