Shiva Kashid, a humble barber, played a pivotal role in saving the life of the legendary Maratha warrior king, Shivaji, during his daring escape from Panhalgad. In a selfless act of bravery and sacrifice, Shiva Kashid agreed to impersonate Shivaji, risking his own life to ensure the safety of his king. This courageous act is a testament to the unwavering loyalty and dedication of Shiva Kashid to Shivaji and the cause of 'Swarajya.'

The escape from Panhalgad was a perilous endeavor, with Shivaji and his forces besieged by a formidable enemy army led by General Siddi Johar. Knowing that they were outnumbered and facing imminent capture, Shivaji devised a plan that involved using a body double to divert the enemy's attention. Shiva Kashid, who bore a striking resemblance to Shivaji, willingly took on this dangerous role, fully aware of the risks involved.

As the escape unfolded, Shiva Kashid, disguised as Shivaji, accompanied the real king on the secret route out of Panhalgad. When the enemy forces spotted them, Shivaji made the difficult decision to leave Shiva Kashid behind as bait, allowing him to continue the escape while the barber bravely faced the pursuing army. This sacrificial act bought crucial time for Shivaji to reach safety, thanks to the diversion created by Shiva Kashid.

The bravery and sacrifice of Shiva Kashid did not go unnoticed. Commander-in-Chief Baji Prabhu Deshpande, along with a small group of men, including Shiva Kashid, engaged in a fierce battle at Ghod Khind against Siddi Johar's massive army. Baji Prabhu fought valiantly until the very end, ensuring that Shivaji could escape safely. The cannon fire from Vishalgad, signaling Shivaji's successful arrival, marked the culmination of this daring escape plan.

Despite the ultimate sacrifice made by Shiva Kashid, his story of heroism and loyalty has often been overlooked in historical narratives. However, the memory of his courageous act lives on through a massive statue erected in his honor at the Panhala fort, serving as a reminder of his selfless devotion to his king and 'Swarajya.' The renaming of Ghod Khind to 'Pavan Khind' further immortalizes the sacrifice and valor displayed by Shiva Kashid and the Maratha warriors who fought alongside him.

In conclusion, the story of Shiva Kashid's bravery exemplifies the profound bond between a common barber and his king, showcasing the extraordinary lengths to which individuals were willing to go to protect their leader and the ideals of 'Swarajya.' Shiva Kashid's selfless act of sacrifice during the escape from Panhalgad stands as a timeless testament to courage, loyalty, and the indomitable spirit of the Maratha warriors in the face of adversity.

In the turbulent days of 1666, Shivaji, the renowned Maratha chieftain got trapped inside the fort of Panhalgad surrounded by Adilshahi forces. And so, in a daring attempt to escape and defy what he thought was the oppressive rulership, Shivaji laid down an escape plan. However, this strategy demanded the utmost commitment and privacy. At this point, Shiva Kashid the barber became famous for saving Shivaji’s life.

Shiva Kashid was one of Shivaji’s close allies who was asked to assist his lord out of a strong fortress. He understood that situation very well and thus showed his firm loyalty as required by accepting such an extremely dangerous task. Using his nimble hands and astute brain, he hatched a plot that would make people think that Shivaji was leaving Panhalgad on a routine barber visit.

On that day of destiny when there was much hustle and bustle within the confines of the fortresses, Shiva Kashid deftly managed such covert operations. While hidden in Shiva Kashid’s quarters at dawn, Shivaji got disguised beyond recognition following Shiva Kashid's expert attention. Having had his hair neatly cut and his face altered, Shivaji stepped out from behind that barber’s shop into the public eye unidentifiable from anyone wishing to obstruct him.
Several obstacles and challenges were met by the escape party as they made their way through labyrinths within Panhalgad. Shiv Kashid, however, proved to be quite ingenious and quick in his thinking thus guiding them through every dangerous point with their lives intact. His deep knowledge of the plan of the fortress was a great asset, which helped the team travel incognito.

Finally, in darkness, Shivaji and his comrades arrived safely in the countryside having outwitted their pursuers. Through this incredible escape that Shiva Kashid’s unwavering loyalty and resourcefulness had made possible, Shivaji was saved for another day to fight against the oppressors he fought for years.

In history books, Shiva Kashid’s name shines as a symbol of dedication and bravery. In addition to saving a great leader’s life, these heroic acts are part of our heritage to resist oppression. He is an example of just how much ordinary people can shape events in history; from being a barber who shapes destiny with his scissors.
