Since 2019 general elections are almost on their way, there is no question that people are thinking about which party to vote for.... Indeed an apt question Mr. Srinivas. And it is a really hard question to answer – every party has its own stance and the one with which you identify the most is always likely to be your pick on the EVM. I sometimes wonder where we have reached in democracy... it's a difficult choice because we have seen all and done with all too!!
But how should one really vote? Here’s a more efficient way to making your vote matter –
Once the election manifestos are out, people would vote for the policies they believe in. Some people want more jobs, while others are thinking of protecting their way of life from some imagined threat, while even others are in the “Nothing good is ever going to happen here. You might as well not vote at all” mode!
However, a weird phenomenon that I often see is that people are more into finding faults in others rather than critically looking at the government. People who follow the policies of the BJP are more bent on showing the Congress down rather than really figuring out if this party has been successful in its tenure.
Here's a look at some of its promises before coming to power
- Bringing back all foreign black money in India.
- Striving for development and creating 2 crore jobs per year.
- Making the country safe for women.
- Distributing rupees 15 lac on every bank account from the black money brought back.
These were some of the major promises that this government made.
However, when it came to intent, it did not do any of this at all. No black money has been brought back to the country – and the demonetization initiative has been an abject failure. On the other hand, it shows no impetus to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill or strengthen the Whistleblowers Act passed by the UPA regime. In fact, the Modi administration added 10 exemptions in its 2015 amendment, making whistleblowing impossible. No wonder corruption is not going down!
Safety of women, on the other hand, has been only a heavily politicized issue and it's far from achieving any percentage of the goal with regular social media posts of women being beaten up and murdered going viral, and little legislation to address the root cause of these disparities!
On the economic part, the government has not created anywhere close to 2 crore jobs per year and has even gone to the extent of saying that selling pakoras (a part of the unorganized section of labor in the country) is a job!
GST has been poorly implemented and affected the state and central coffers – the rupee has slid down the scale and is at its lowest ever since independence while things like GDP and oil prices also suffering knockout punches.
All in all – this government has done little than talk big, spent crores on marketing and traveling, raising statues, and spreading communal polarization. And most people do understand this!
However, it is Modi’s overall charisma and personality that makes people think he is the best option – that and an excellent reputation management and marketing team. It is so effective that even with so much to show for his inabilities, people do not see a better option.
He is now a compromise rather than choice!
We are all tired of the dynasty politics of Congress and even when it comes to regional party alliances, hoping for a strong government seems unlikely. Then who should we vote for? The Fuhrer or the Tsar dynasty or the Princely state's coalition?
The answers simpler than you think. All you need to do is follow a pyramid model and vote for the best MP in your constituency.I am going to do that for sure. Take a look at his/her policies, what s/he has done for the area, his presence and representation in the Lok Sabha and the likes. Forget parties and color, forget PM candidates, take a look at credentials and cast your vote. All of it is going to add up and chose the right person on top!
I also believe that democracy could sustain when the opposition is strong. If there are people who could object to you, make you prove rather than just accept, you perform better.
So let's make an opposition stronger this season, choose the grassroots person and contribute in whichever way we can.
Happy voting.
