This is the phase diagram which shows the general structure of soil and help us to study about soil. By finiding the weight of water and solids, we can simply determine the water content.
Now let's see various methods to determine water content of soil ->
- Oven dry method :- This is most accurate method but time cosuming, it generally takes 24 hours to determine water content. It is lab method.
- Pycnometer method :- This method could be used to determine water content and specific gravity as well. It is lab method.
- Calcium carbide method :- This is quickest method but less accurate also.
- Alcohol method :- It is field method, quick and less accurate method. Methylated spirit alcohol is used which increases rate of evaporation. Not used for organic and calcium containing soil.
- Sand bath method :- It is also a field method and less accurate. Not used for organic soil.
- Torsion balance method or Infrared method :- Accurate and lab method. Used for hygroscopic soil which reabsorbs water fastely. In this method drying and weighing done simultaneously.
