How Many Languages are Spoken in India?

Honestly, there isn't just one answer to this question. If someone asks me how many languages are spoken in India, I'd say more than 1,600. But here's where it gets a little confusing. Depending on what you're counting, you might also hear 22 languages or 121 languages, and surprisingly, all of these numbers are correct.

Why Numbers May Differ

I think this is where most people get confused.

The number changes because not everyone counts languages in the same way.

For example:

  • 22 languages are officially recognized in the Indian Constitution.

  • 121 languages have more than 10,000 native speakers, according to the Census.

  • More than 1,600 mother tongues were reported by people across the country.

Some of these are considered separate languages, while others are grouped together as dialects. That's why you'll find different numbers on different websites.

India's languages belong to different language families.

The biggest ones are the following:

  • Indo-Aryan (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, etc.)

  • Dravidian (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam)

  • Austroasiatic

  • Sino-Tibetan

You don't really need to remember all these names, but they simply tell us where different Indian languages originated and how they're related to each other.

Major Categories 

Some of the most widely spoken languages in India include:

  • Hindi

  • Bengali

  • Marathi

  • Telugu

  • Tamil

  • Gujarati

  • Urdu

  • Kannada

  • Malayalam

  • Punjabi

  • Odia

  • Assamese

And that's still just a small part of India's linguistic diversity because hundreds of regional and tribal languages are spoken across different states.

I have always found this fascinating about India. You can travel from one state to another, and everything changes—the language, food, festivals, clothing, and sometimes even the script.

In fact, many Indians grow up speaking two or three languages without even realizing it's something special. For example, someone may speak their mother tongue at home, Hindi while travelling, and English at school or work. I think that's one of the things that makes India incredibly unique compared to most countries.

So, if you ask me how many languages are spoken in India, I'd simply say more than 1,600. But if someone says India has 22 or 121 languages, they're not wrong either, as they're just talking about different ways of counting them. That's what makes India one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the entire world.
