Not sure what you mean by “their mistakes”. That’s very broad and can include many things. Let’s first address the delays and cancellation.

In instances of delays and cancellation, earlier, the maximum compensation amount an airline was to pay the passengers was Rs 3,000. However, in 2016, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) revised that amount, increasing it to Rs 20,000.

If your Jet Airways flight is delayed by one hour, you will be compensated with Rs 5000. If it’s 2 hours, you will get Rs 7,500. And if it’s more than 2 hours, you will get Rs 10,000. (In each of these cases, the people will also receive their ticket fare.)

Also, in any of the delayed scenario, the passengers are entitled to free meals and refreshments.

And if the expected departure is more than 24 hours later than the actual scheduled time, the airline must provide free hotel accommodation to the passengers, as well as compensate them with Rs 20,000 and an alternate flight.

Now note, these airline compensations doesn’t hold true if the delay and cancellation are caused by some exceptional circumstances, like a natural calamity, political turmoil, or anything that’s beyond the control of the airline.

Now coming to the “mistake” part in your question. Airlines and in-house crews can possibly make innumerable mistakes. For instance, only yesterday, Jet Airways crew forgot to maintain the cabin pressure, which led to many passengers bleed from nose and ears. One of the passengers now demands Rs 30 lakhs in Jet Airways compensation and 100 business upgrades.

Here’s a video report by The Quint:

In such cases of “mistakes” and errors, no exact amount of compensation is outlined. It depends on the airline itself to decide for the appropriate amount and other reparation. Also, these cases can be contested in judicial court on the basis of existing laws and directives.

So, to answer your question, for delays and cancellation, every airline compensation, including Jet Airways compensation, is fixed. They have to pay up to Rs 20,000. However, in cases of technical errors, negligence, and other issues, the reparation depends on the airline to airline. And the later cases, in case if the passengers aren’t satisfied with anything, can be taken to the judicial court.
