To play Roblox, create a free account, install the Roblox app, choose a game (called an “experience”) from the platform, and press Play. The controls depend on your device and the particular game, but most experiences teach you the basic controls when you join.
One thing that confused me about Roblox initially is that Roblox isn't actually one single game. It's more like a huge platform containing millions of different experiences created by developers. You can play obstacle courses, role-playing games, racing games, survival games, simulators and much more.
Getting Started
Playing Roblox for the first time is pretty simple:
Go to Roblox or install the official app.
Create an account and enter your correct age.
Choose your username and password.
Browse or search for a game you want to try.
Open its page and check its content maturity information.
Select Play.
Learn that game's objectives and start playing.
I'd start with something simple instead of immediately choosing a complicated multiplayer game. Roblox becomes much easier once you've spent some time understanding how movement, avatars and individual experiences work.
Controls
Controls vary depending on whether you're using a computer, phone, tablet or console.
On a PC, many Roblox experiences commonly use:
W – Move forward
S – Move backward
A – Move left
D – Move right
Spacebar – Jump
Mouse – Look around/interact
Mobile games usually provide on-screen movement and action controls.
Individual experiences can add completely different controls, so always check the instructions shown inside the game.
Game Types
There isn't one particular way to “win Roblox” because every experience has its own objective.
Popular categories include:
Obstacle courses or “obbies”
Role-playing
Adventure
Racing
Sports
Simulation
Survival
Puzzle
Tycoon/building games
That's probably why Roblox became so huge. If one game gets boring, you don't necessarily leave Roblox—you just enter another experience.
Cost
Roblox itself is free to download and play, and many experiences can be played without spending money.
However, Roblox has a virtual currency called Robux. Players can use Robux for things such as avatar items and purchases within experiences.
This is where I'd be careful, especially with children. “Free game” doesn't necessarily mean there's nothing available to buy once you're inside it.
Parents can set monthly spending limits and spending notifications through Roblox's parental controls.
Child Safety
Roblox can be used by children, but because it is an online platform containing user-created experiences and social features, parental involvement is important.
Roblox currently provides age-based protections, content maturity settings, controls for communication, screen-time management, spending controls, and the ability for parents to allow or block particular experiences.
For younger players, I would recommend parents:
Use the child's correct age when creating the account.
Link a parent account and review parental controls.
Check content maturity before allowing an experience.
Review communication/chat settings.
Set screen-time and spending boundaries.
Teach children not to share passwords or personal information.
Show them how to block and report inappropriate behaviour.
Roblox also allows users to report inappropriate content or behaviour and block or mute other players.
And this matters more to me than simply asking whether Roblox is “safe” or “unsafe.” No large online platform containing millions of users and experiences can be reduced to one label. What a child plays, who they interact with and which settings parents use make a real difference.
