Eligibility Criteria for Admission to Top IIMs in India

If you are serious about getting into one of the top IIMs, the first thing you need to do is get your eligibility right. Many students jump straight into CAT preparation without checking whether they even qualify, and that is a mistake you do not want to make.

Academic Qualifications

You need a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Simple as that. The catch is the minimum percentage requirement:

  • General & OBC-NC candidates need at least 50% aggregate in graduation
  • SC, ST & PwD candidates need at least 45% aggregate in graduation

This percentage is calculated across all semesters or years of your undergraduate degree, not just the final year. So if you had a rough first year, it counts.

Are Final Year Students Eligible?

Yes. If you are currently in your final year of graduation, you can still apply. However, your admission stays provisional until you submit your final marksheet and prove that you meet the minimum percentage cutoff.

Which Entrance Exam Do You Need?

CAT (Common Admission Test). There is no alternative to this. Every IIM, whether old or new, accepts only CAT scores. The exam tests you across three areas:

  • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

CAT is held once a year, usually on the last Sunday of November, and is conducted by one of the IIMs on a rotating basis each year.

Minimum CAT Percentile: What Do the Top IIMs Expect?

Each IIM sets its own cutoffs, and these change slightly every year based on the difficulty of the paper and the applicant pool. Here is a realistic picture:

IIMGeneral CategoryOBC-NCSCSTPwD
IIM Ahmedabad80+75+60+50+60+
IIM Bangalore85+75+65+60+60+
IIM Calcutta85+80+60+45+45+
IIM Lucknow90+87+60+50+50+
IIM Indore90+87+65+55+55+
IIM Kozhikode85+80+60+45+45+

Important: Crossing the overall cutoff is not enough. Each section has its own minimum percentile, and you need to clear all three independently.

Does Work Experience Help?

At most top IIMs, work experience is not mandatory, but it definitely helps. Here is why:

  • IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore factor work experience into their shortlisting and final selection scores
  • Candidates with 2–5 years of solid work experience often get an edge during interviews and WAT rounds
  • Freshers can still make it, but they need outstanding academics and CAT scores to compensate

There is no hard rule saying “you must have X years of experience.” But do not underestimate how much it matters behind the scenes.

Selection Criteria Required for the Top 10 IIMs

Getting a high CAT score only gets you to the door. What happens after that varies by IIM, but the general process looks like this:

Step 1: CAT Score Screening

Only candidates who clear the cutoffs are considered further.

Step 2: Shortlisting for Interview

IIMs look at a mix of your CAT score, past academics (Class 10, Class 12, graduation), work experience, and sometimes gender diversity. Each factor carries a specific weight.

Step 3: Written Ability Test (WAT) + Personal Interview (PI)

This is the final round. You write a short essay on a given topic, followed by a personal interview. The interview panel tests your thinking, communication, awareness, and fit for the programme.

Step 4: Final Merit List

Your final score is a composite of CAT performance, academics, WAT, and PI. The weightage differs across IIMs.

Reservation Policy

IIMs follow the Government of India's reservation norms:

  • OBC-NC (Non-Creamy Layer): 27% seats reserved
  • SC (Scheduled Caste): 15% seats reserved
  • ST (Scheduled Tribe): 7.5% seats reserved
  • PwD (Persons with Disability): 5% horizontal reservation across all categories

Candidates applying under reserved categories must submit valid certificates at the time of application and verification. If you use an expired or invalid certificate, it will disqualify your application.

Quick Checklist Before You Apply

  • Bachelor's degree completed or in final year
  • Minimum 50% in graduation (45% for reserved categories)
  • Valid CAT scorecard from the current cycle
  • Category certificate ready (if applicable)
  • Work experience documents in order (if applicable)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1 Which is the No. 1 IIM college in India?
As per NIRF 2025 rankings, IIM Ahmedabad holds the No. 1 position among all IIMs in India. It also leads in placements with an average package of ₹35.22 lakhs and a highest domestic package of ₹1.1 crore. If you are targeting the best, IIMA is where every serious CAT aspirant sets their sights first.
Q2 What is the minimum CAT percentile required for top IIMs?
For the top IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, you generally need a 99+ percentile in CAT. IIM Mumbai accepts around 98+, while IIM Raipur, Trichy, and Ranchi start from 95+. Keep in mind these are overall cutoffs, as each section has its own minimum, too, and you need to clear all three separately.
Q3 What are the total MBA fees at the top IIM colleges?
MBA fees at top IIMs range between ₹19 lakhs to ₹27.5 lakhs for the full two-year programme. IIM Ahmedabad charges the highest at ₹27.5 lakhs, while IIM Ranchi is on the lower end at ₹19.20 lakhs. Given the average placements these colleges offer, most students recover their fees within the first year of joining a job.
Q4 Can a fresher get admission into a top IIM?
Yes, freshers can get into top IIMs. There is no mandatory work experience requirement. However, IIMs like Ahmedabad and Bangalore do give weightage to work experience during shortlisting and final selection. As a fresher, you need a stronger CAT score and solid academics to make up for the experience gap during interviews.
Q5 What are Baby IIMs, and are they worth it?
Baby IIMs are the newer, smaller IIMs set up after 2010, like IIM Amritsar, Jammu, Nagpur, Udaipur, and others. They are not at the same level as the top 10 IIMs yet, but they still carry the IIM brand, government backing, and decent placements ranging from ₹13 to ₹18 LPA on average. Compared to most private MBA colleges, they are a much better option.
