Bangladesh is said to have approximately 800+ rivers around it. In world rankings, Bangladesh ranks 17th to have the most rivers. All 800 of Bangladesh's rivers are divided into 5 big systems. They are:

  1. The Padma (also known as the Ganges)
  2. The Meghna and The Surma river system
  3. The Jamuna with its other adjoining channels
  4. The North Bengal rivers
  5. The rivers of the Chittagong Hill Tracts

Bangladesh also has some of the most famous rivers that are known to us. They are:

  1. Brahmaputra River (also known as the 3rd longest river in India with a distance of 2,900 km)
  2. Ganges River (2,510 km)
  3. Jamuna River (205 km)
  4. Surma River (900 km)
  5. Madhumati River (372 km)

There are many other rivers in the country of Bangladesh, but these are the most well known ones.

Bangladesh is a country with many rivers, and they shape the land and how people live. Sometimes, these rivers change course quickly, which can affect a large area. This makes it hard to give a perfect description of Bangladesh's land for a long time. In the past, in 1787, a river called Tista had a big flood and its waters suddenly went in a different direction, joining another river called Brahmaputra. This made Brahmaputra change its path, creating a new main lower river called Jamuna. Another smaller river now flows where Brahmaputra used to.

Every year, from June to October, the rivers overflow, flooding the countryside. The highest flooding usually happens in September or October, and it goes down quickly in November. This flooding has good and bad sides. It brings important nutrients to the soil, but it can also damage crops and homes, and sometimes hurt people and animals.

The rivers in Bangladesh can be divided into five groups: (1) Padma (or Ganges) and its streams in the delta, (2) Meghna and Surma rivers, (3) Jamuna and the nearby channels, (4) rivers in North Bengal, and (5) rivers in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and nearby areas.
