The part - of - speech describes how a word behaves within a sentence, both grammatically and also in terms of meaning. When employed in different contexts, a single word can serve as and over one element of speech. When using a dictionary, knowing the parts of speech is critical for finding the accurate definition of a word. There are seven different parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions.

  • Nouns- Nouns are things we can think of as being concrete - people (or animals), places or things. They can be singular or plural. Nouns include: bike; boat; table; tree.
  • Pronoun- A pronoun is a word that acts as a substitute for a noun. A pronoun is often used to substitute the antecedent, which is a specific noun.
  • Verbs- In a sentence, the verb expresses activity or being.
  • Adjective- A noun or pronoun's adjective is a word that describes or modifies it.
  • Adverb- A verb, an adjective, or another adverb, but not a noun, is described or modified by an adverb.
  • Preposition- A preposition is indeed a word that comes before a noun phrase and modifies another word in a sentence.
  • Conjunction- A conjunction is indeed a term, expression, or sentence that connects two or more objects and shows how they are related.
