The cost of spices was very expensive in the past. However, the spice monopoly had collapsed by the 19th century, allowing many people to afford spices. Nevertheless, certain spices are still very expensive today. Some of these spices can charge as much as a small car per kilo. Spices were a sign of status in ancient Rome and were heavily consumed by affluent individuals. Due to the strong demand for cinnamon and pepper, spice dealers went to Arabia and India to transport them back to Rome. So, let us see what are those most expensive spices:

  • Saffron- It costs around £15000 per kilogram. Saffron comes from a flower named Crocus Sativus, and its high price is due to the difficult harvesting process that involves delicately removing the stigmas by hand to avoid harm and letting them dry. Along with improving the flavour of food, it can also be used to scent baths and even act as a mild narcotic.

  • Vanilla- It costs around £250 per kilogram. The main reason that vanilla is such an expensive spice is that it is made from the flowers of orchids in the genus vanilla, which must be hand-pollinated and harvested by hand just before they ripen. Due to their rich, creamy flavour, Madagascar’s Bourbon vanilla beans are the most widely available variety of vanilla.

  • Mahlab- It costs around £70 per kilogram. Mahlab is a relatively uncommon spice that is made from the seed kernel of St. Lucie cherries, which are indigenous to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. One of the most adaptable spices in the world, its flavour is best characterised as a mingling of cherries, almonds and flowery.
