In English Vinglish, Laurent expresses genuine admiration and affection for Sridevi's character, Shashi. He tells her, in essence, that she is a wonderful woman who deserves to be respected and appreciated for who she is. Rather than focusing on romance alone, his words recognize her kindness, strength, and the confidence she gradually develops throughout the film.

The thing is, Laurent never tries to force a relationship. Instead, he becomes someone who helps Shashi see the value in herself when she has spent years feeling ignored and underestimated.

The conversation takes place while Shashi is attending her English-speaking class in New York. During the course, she meets people from different cultures, and Laurent is one of the classmates who treats her with kindness and respect from the very beginning.

I think what makes these scenes so special is that Laurent never laughs at Shashi's broken English. Instead, he encourages her, makes her feel comfortable, and appreciates her personality beyond language or appearance. That simple respect slowly helps Shashi regain the confidence she had lost over the years.

To be honest, Laurent's words are much deeper than a romantic confession.

They symbolize:

  • Respect over appearance.

  • Kindness without expectations.

  • Appreciating someone for who they truly are.

  • Helping another person rediscover their self-worth.

The relationship between Laurent and Shashi reminds us that sometimes all a person needs is someone who genuinely believes in them.

I think Laurent's character plays a very important role in the film because he helps Shashi realize that she deserves respect not because she learns English, but because she has always been worthy of it.

His presence also highlights the contrast between how strangers sometimes treat us with more kindness than the people closest to us. That emotional contrast makes Shashi's personal journey even more powerful.

Many viewers interpret the relationship between Laurent and Shashi differently.

Some see it as a quiet, one-sided love story. Others believe it represents emotional support rather than romance. I have noticed that many fans, including myself, sometimes feel that maybe, in another life or another story, Laurent and Shashi could have ended up together. But then reality hits, and we remember that English Vinglish was never meant to be a romantic film.

For me, this is my favorite movie of all time. It is such an enjoyable film, but at the same time, it carries an incredibly deep meaning. Every time I watch it, I feel like Laurent and Shashi share a connection that goes beyond words. A small part of me wishes they had ended up together, but I also understand why the film chose a different path. And honestly, that's what makes it so beautiful; it stays true to life instead of becoming a fairy tale.

As a movie buff and being English Vinglish is one of my favorite movies, I have watched this masterpiece a lot of times. Lt. Shri SriDevi Ji gave an iconic performance in the movie that is still fresh in our memories.

At the end of the movie when Laurent walked up to her and muttered something in French that made a majority of people confused what he actually said. Those words were:

Quoi qu’il arrive ta rencontre restera spéciale, mon amie, toujours..
  • Quoi qu’il arrive- Whatever happens
  • La rencontre- meeting
  • Mon amie- my friend
  • Spéciale- special
  • Rester- to remain
  • Toujours- always

When we sum up the meaning of all these words it coveys a meaningful sentence that is:

No MATTER WHATEVER HAPPENS IN LIFE, THE MEETING WITH YOU WILL ALWAYS REMAIN SPECIAL , MY FRIEND!

At the end of English Vinglish, Laurent says this line in French to Shashi (Sridevi):

“Quoi qu’il arrive, ta rencontre restera spéciale, mon amie, toujours.”

Its meaning in English is

“No matter what happens, meeting you will always remain special to me, my friend.”

The scene became very memorable because Laurent genuinely respected and admired Shashi when she was struggling with confidence and language barriers. Many viewers loved their emotional connection in the film. Honestly, that dialogue became one of the most talked-about moments from English Vinglish because it was simple, emotional, and beautifully expressed.
